Vilela’s Farm

Vilela family’s passion for farming goes back as early as 1970. With the flourishing of sugar cane industry, with the Municipality of Ibaan slowly allotting its land area for the latter as plantation, the family’s patriarch started planting variety of trees in family home’s backyard.

Unfortunately, the backyard was somehow taken for granted when the family’s patriarch died during his late 30’s. The matriarch was then left with the responsibilities of looking after her children and taking the helm of managing their sugar plantation at the same time. This further left the farm to be almost forgotten by the family.

Then in the early part of year 2013, Maila Vilela – Toreja, one of the Vilela siblings, started cultivating the farm to its present status. She has added more variety of fruit-bearing trees, flowers and others to make it more like a working-farm. But one thing that is remarkable about the farm is that, Maila makes use of organic fertilizers which she herself formulate using different plants and herbs available at the farm itself. In a sense, it has become a self-sufficient farm supporting itself with anything organic available within the area.

In almost two years, the farm’s operation expanded with more and more activities it offers to the public. With the help of organic farming colleagues, Vilela’s Farm now, aside from plain farm visit, offer cooking lessons using the fruits and vegetables grown in the farm, as well as farming lectures to visitors.
